Our Team of Volunteers

Helping to run a railway

The ARHS encourages people of all ages to consider becoming an active volunteer with our Canberra-based railway.

There is a wide range of activities which keeps our trains running and our museum open – they require a variety of technical and non-technical skills and support.

For example, our volunteers provide train crews (including drivers, guards and car conductors), locomotive and passenger car maintenance and preparation teams, museum guides, and track maintenance crews.

Where appropriate, training is provided. Where safeworking skills are required, our training is accredited with rail safety authorities.

Volunteer participation

More than 100 volunteers are actively involved in the rail operations of the Society.

Track machines on Michelago Tourist Railway

We encourage anyone with a railway interest at heart to become involved.

Often volunteers join and try out some of the tasks before finding their own niche within the hundreds of on-going activities.

No matter what qualifications a volunteer may bring to the Society, there are activities available which are both rewarding and of tremendous value to the Society and the wider community.

Even where the Society already has someone performing some unique or specialised task, no offer of assistance is rejected.

The following is a list (in no particular order) of just some of the skills needed to run the Society:
